5th Street gets bike lanes from NY to RI Avenues!

A DDOT crew is installing new bike and parking lanes on the 1100 to 1700 blocks of Fifth Street today. They are expected to complete the project tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov. 17. This is great news for cyclists who use Fifth Street rather than taking NJ Ave or 6th Street to go and from downtown. Fifth St wont be getting the contraflow bike lane that has been installed on 15th St NW (official commemorative event with Mayor Fenty, CM Evans, and DDOT Director Gabe Klein scheduled for 10:30am Thursday, Nov. 19, at 15th & U Streets), but there is plenty of contraflow bike traffic on Fifth St NW since many cyclists reasonable prefer to avoid the crazy rush hour congestion and/or speeding motorists on NJ Ave and 6th Street.

The other thing this bike lane does is give four of the cyclist community association presidents and Fifth St residents of the CCCA, MVSNA and ECCA one more thing we can all enjoy and make use of in common. Bike lanes bring unity to the community!
